YOUR “CADGER” NEEDS YOU!
We are raising £8,000 to automate and renovate the village clock
As you may know, our much-loved Village Hall began life as the village school, built on land generously gifted to the village by The Marquess of Exeter. The school opened in 1868.The clock was funded by public subscription. This tradition of generosity gave rise to the clock’s enduring nickname, “The Cadger.” Today, it remains a cherished heritage feature in the village, and many residents take comfort in hearing it mark the hours day and night.
The clock required major repairs in 1901 – the last time records indicate a major renovation was undertaken - and once again the local community rallied to fund the work. True to its name, The Cadger has continued to rely on community support ever since. For decades, the clock was manually wound each week by two devoted volunteers Patsy & Martyn Bates. Their dedication was extraordinary, especially given the awkward and physically demanding nature of the task at height. Sadly, they were forced to step back from this commitment last year due to ill health, and since then Patsy has passed away. The village remains deeply grateful for their long service.
Although we now have a small group of volunteers who have stepped in to keep the clock running, this is not a sustainable long-term solution. The mechanisms are complex and respond best to consistent, familiar handling—a challenge with multiple volunteers, as we are already discovering.
For these reasons, the Trustees are now seeking to automate both the clock and chime while preserving all the historical workings and ensuring no visible change to either the interior or exterior of the tower. We have obtained a quote from a reputable local specialist who can carry out the automation and refurbish the clock face. The cost of this work is £8,000.
